There was palpable tension in the match between Rivers United and Akwa United at Adokiya Amesiamaka stadium on Sunday, July 18, as angry fans of the former NPL club attacked a fan of the latter.
WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that trouble started after the football fan raised a placard in support of his team; Akwa United.
The action was said to have angered the home fans who allegedly descended on the Akwa United fan.
Also, the centre referee who officiated the match was held hostage by the fans after the match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
It took the intervention of the Rivers state commissioner for sports, Boma Yaye for the centre referee to be escorted out of the stadium.
Fans were allowed in the stadium in contravention of COVID-19 protocols.
