The People’s Democratic Party has reacted to the Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the victory of Rotimi Akeredolu in the Ondo State governorship election that was held in October 2020.
In a split judgement delivered by a seven-man panel at the apex court of the land on Wednesday, 28th, July, 2021, four judges said Akeredolu was duly elected, while three had a contrary opinion.
The PDP and its candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, had earlier filed an appeal to the Supreme Court, seeking to nullify Akeredolu’s victory on the ground that he wasn’t qualified to contest the election.
The opposition party argued that Akeredolu’s candidacy was sponsored by Governor Mai Buni of Yobe State, which is against the constitution.
In reaction to the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the PDP said the split judgement vindicates its appeal. The PDP said the fact that three judges of the court agreed with the appeal shows that it was genuine.
The opposition party said this in a press statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan.
Part of the statement read:
“The party notes that the majority judgement as presented by the Supreme Court did not address the impunity of the action of the Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, in functioning as the Chairman of the APC while at the same time holding office as a sitting governor, contrary to the provisions of section 183 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as well as the constitution of the APC.”
