Following the deadline given to the owners of some residential buildings said to have been distressed by an agency of the Lagos State government, the names of 45 buildings in various parts of the state which are to be demolished any moment from now have been revealed.
There have been various complaints about residential buildings in Lagos State which have become inhabitable but are being inhabited by some residents. In some instances, those buildings that are not habitable have collapsed in the state.
But on Tuesday, August 10, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), an agency of the state government in charge of looking at conditions of buildings in the state, came out with a list of 45 buildings it described as distressed and which it said it will demolish after seven days notice given to the owners and developers.
The 45 buildings, comprising bungalows, two storeys, three storeys and four storeys in some areas of the state, were said to have failed building integrity tests in the state and the agency had no choice but to pull them down.
Some of the buildings are located in Apapa, Badagry, Bariga, Ikeja, Kosofe, Surulere, Mushin, Oshodi, Yaba, Ojokoro, Ifako Ijaiye, among others.
The agency has therefore given the owners of the structures seven days to pull them down, failure of which the agency will roll out its equipment and demolish the said 45 buildings after the expiration of the deadline.
According to a statement issued by Mr Gbolahan Owodunni, the General Manager of LASBCA, on the website of the agency on Tuesday entitled: “Demolition Notice,” the agency said after the seven-day notice, it will have no other choice but to demolish those buildings.
According to the statement: “This is to inform the general public that the underlisted distressed structures in the state shall be removed by Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) having served all the statutory enforcement notices and with no response from the respective owners/developers.
“Following the above, a final notice is hereby given that if the underlisted distressed structures are not removed within seven days of this notice by their respective owners/developers in line with regulatory provision of the law, such structures shall be demolished.
“Any owner/developer that intends to dispute the distressed condition of the structure is required to present a Complete Structural Stability Report duly certified by a COREN Registered Engineer within seven days or the structure shall be demolished and the cost of demolition shall be paid from the owner/developer.”
