The United Nations (UN) has expressed deep concern about the incessant killings in Niger.
Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres condemned the latest gunmen attack in Banibangou in the region of Tillabéri of Niger.
Spokesman, Stephane Dujarric briefed correspondents at UN headquarters in New York on Thursday.
At least 15 people were murdered on Monday in an attack in western Niger, less than two weeks after 33 people were killed by jihadists.
Banibangou, located within the three-border region between Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, has been targeted in recent years by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
“Guterres expresses his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured a swift recovery”, Dujarric noted.
The UN chief reaffirmed readiness to support the government’s efforts to enhance the protection of civilians across the Sahel.
Dujarric, however, said the UN mission camp in Aguelhok, in the Kidal region, was attacked on Wednesday.
Multiple rounds fired directly and indirectly landed near the UN premises. The peacekeepers repelled the assault.
Three UN military personnel and two civilians were injured in what was the fifth attack on the same camp in 2021.
Following the August 8th attack in Gao, which left about 50 civilians dead, peacekeepers are patrolling the area, day and night.
“Peacekeepers have established a temporary base in the area of Ouattagouna, from where they will protect civilians,” Dujarric added.
