Barcelona’s new signing, Sergio Aguero has turned down the opportunity to wear the club’s legendary number 10 shirt, according to Sport’s Albert Roger.
Aguero, who wore the exact number for Manchester City before moving to Barcelona in the summer, was told to take the number 10 jersey by second captain Gerard Pique.
However, the former Manchester City striker rejected the possibility of taking over the number made vacant by Lionel Messi’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain.
Barca’s number 10 jersey has been worn by players such as Diego Maradona, Pep Guardiola, Hristo Stoichkov, Romario, Rivaldo, Riquelme, Ronaldinho.
The brand of Barcelona’s number 10 jersey has become synonymous with Messi and Aguero may have rejected it given all the pressure that comes with the shirt.
With Aguero turning down the chance to wear the No. 10, it still remains vacant with other reports suggesting that Phillipe Coutinho may wear it this season if he remains at the club.
The Brazilian is being linked away from the Camp Nou and La Liga’s rules place a restriction on usable kit numbers, which would render it impossible for Barcelona to consider retiring the number.
Coutinho has reportedly been offered the jersey and he could well step out as Barcelona’s new number 10 in the coming days.
