Unknown gunmen have reportedly abducted a former senator representing Eket senatorial district in Akwa Ibom state, Nelson Effiong.
The abduction was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the police spokesman, Odiko Macdon in Akwa Ibom.
According to the police spokesman, the senator was kidnapped “at a popular drinking spot” in Uyo at about 10pm on Sunday, September 5.
“We have received that sad report of the kidnapped of the Senator,” he said.
“He was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at a popular drinking spot on Oron Road, Uyo
“The commissioner of police Andrew Amiengheme is miffed about it and has promised to spare no resources in ensuring his safe rescue and perpetrators brought to book.”
Macdon said the Akwa Ibom police command would ensure that the culprits are found and prosecuted.
He said the police would use “available resources” to secure the release of the former senator as soon as possible.
According to NAN report, seven people were “seriously injured” during the attack.
