Victor Oke, an Osun State University final year student, was reportedly shot and cut with matchets by suspected cultists.
WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the Political Science student was later set ablaze before he was rescued and taken to a hospital for refusing to join a fraternity.
The University’s administration, on the other hand, called for the alleged cultists to be arrested on Monday. Ademola Adesoji, the University Public Relations Officer, confirmed Victor’s status as a part-time final-year Political Science student in a statement released on Monday.
“We noticed that Victor was absent for his final paper in the afternoon and decided to contact his parents.
“It was later discovered that he was attacked by unknown cultists in the early hours of Saturday.
“Victor was shouting that he was not joining their cult group while they continued to hit him with cutlasses, hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.
“The university security unit is currently working with the Police to ensure the culprits are exposed and brought to book. The cultists must be arrested,” he added.
The university student’s harassment by cultists is coming weeks after a 12-year-old boy, Sylvester Oromoni, was allegedly beaten to death at Dowen College, Lagos State, for refusing to join a cult.
The incident which attracted nationwide outrage is still under police investigation.
The boy had mentioned names of five persons responsible for his pains before he finally gave up the ghost.
Dowen College had been shut down by the Lagos State government till further notice.
