Turkey international footballer and Konyaspor star, Ahmet Yılmaz Calik has died in a horror car crash while on his way to go arrange his wedding in the capital Ankara on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old defender was killed after he reportedly lost control of his car near Gölba, in the capital Ankara. He was on his way to go arrange his wedding on a day off from Konyaspor training before the crash.
“We are in deep sorrow to have lost our player Ahmet Çalik who earned our fans’ and city’s love since the first day he arrived at Konyaspor,” the club wrote on Twitter.
The Turkish Football Federation said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that we learned that Ahmet Calik, football player of Ittifak Holding Konyaspor, who also played in our National Team, passed away as a result of a traffic accident.
“May Allah have mercy on the deceased; Our condolences to his family, relatives, Ittifak Holding Konyaspor Club and the Turkish football community.”
Former Galatasaray and Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski paid tribute by tweeting: I’m so sorry to hear the news, I’m in shock. Death doesn’t suit you, brother! May your place be heaven.
Known for his athleticism and aggressive defending, Calik had an impressive career at both club level and internationally, representing Turkey at the UEFA under-19 Championship and FIFA under-20 World Cup in 2013.
