AFCON 2021 final: Why Egypt wants final day against Senegal moved

Egypt has told the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to move the date of the Africa Cup of Nations final to a different date.

The North Africans want the game played on Monday, arguing that they have played more minutes than any other team in the tournament.

Egypt defeated Cameroon 3-1 in a penalty shootout to book its place in the final of the competition on Thursday night.

It was the third time Carlos Queiroz’s side will be involved in extra time in the tournament.

CAF has already fixed Sunday for the final clash with Cameroon and Burkina Faso slugging it out in the third-place game on Saturday.

Giving his reasons why the match should be moved, Egypt assistant coach, Diaa El-Sayed said, “We are the only team that played 120 minutes in three consecutive games.

“The players are fully focused, they have a good base to build on and we thank their clubs for that.

“Salah being the group leader gives the players a lot of positive energy as well,” El-Sayed told a press conference after the game.
