Gunmen have reportedly killed five persons, injured many others, and burnt vehicles during separate attacks at two polling units in Enugu State.
The incident happened on Wednesday during the council chairmen and councillorship elections at Enugu South and Agbani council areas of the state.
The election which was marred by apathy, was largely peaceful except in Aninri, Awgu, Nkanu West and Enugu South where hoodlums reportedly rained terror.
According to PUNCH, sources said the gunmen invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III in Enugu South Local Government Area and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA, and disrupted the exercise.
One of the sources said the hoodlums destroyed electoral materials after chasing away voters.
The source who simply gave his name as Cyprian Nwobodo, said about five persons were shot and killed while some people escaped with machete cuts and bullet wounds. They also burnt two vehicles belonging to community members who came to exercise their suffrage, the source added.
“I overheard the gunmen shouting from my hiding that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East,” the source recounted.
The state police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
