Authorities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have said in a statement that no member of the corps was shot by the police.
The NYSC the statement on Friday in reaction to viral news reports that a corps member was shot by the police while on his way to the weekly community development service (CDS) on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the statement, “The attention of the Management of NYSC has been drawn to the news making rounds in the social media that a corps member was shot dead by policemen at Ibadan while returning with his car from the weekly Community Development Service within the Ibadan metropolis.
“To put the records straight, no corps member was shot in the head or chest and no life was lost during the encounter between some corps members and policemen on duty.
“As a matter of fact, the police authorities in Oyo State quickly intervened and the situation was immediately brought under control, and normalcy returned as expected.”
The statement added that “however, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State has authorised an investigation into the matter to ensure that those who erred are reprimanded accordingly.”
Reports were rife on Thursday that business activities were disrupted in Ibadan as students and traders took to the streets to protest the alleged shooting of a corps member in Oluyole Local Government Area by a police officer.
The incident, which came barely two weeks after a similar incident at the Apata area in Ido Local Government Area, threw the entire neighbourhood into pandemonium.
