A newly born abandoned baby boy has been found with a note from his supposed mother in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
The baby was said to have been found around 10pm on Thursday evening at the residential area opposite Deeper Life Bible Church close to relevant technology area of police children school, Lafia, was seen lying on the ground.
Speaking with Daily Trust, Malama Fatima Muhammad, explained that their attention was drawn to the abandoned baby by some passersby.
According to her, the baby was abandoned alongside a letter indicating that the mother of the baby presented the child as a gift to a resident of the area, one Muhammadu Yaro.
The resident whose name was on the letter said he is a member of an Islamic aid group and did not know anything about the baby. He urged the appropriate authorities to render the necessary support to ensure safety of the baby.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ramhan Nansel, said the matter was reported at ‘B’ Division and that the baby had been handed over to the state Ministry for Women Affairs.
He said, “Investigation is ongoing to fish out and prosecute the perpetrator of the act to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The officer in charge of Nasarawa children’s home, Mrs Charity Lawrence, who also confirmed the incident, said the newborn was brought to the children’s home about 3:30pm on Friday.
Lawrence said the baby had yellowish eyes when he was brought but had been treated by the home’s medical personnel.
She said the baby would be taken to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia for further proper medication on Monday.
