Two farmers have been killed by gunmen suspected to be cultists in Obelle community in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State.
According to PUNCH, chief in the community who confirmed the killings said it happened on Friday when the victims were returning from the farm.
The source, a former acting Chairman of Community Development Committee in Obelle, Chief Isreal Anele, told newsmen that the incident took place on a farm road.
Anele further said the killing has resulted in panic in the community as some natives were fleeing to safer areas at the main time.
“Our brothers were coming back from the farm because according to the local government chairman peace has been restored in Obelle so everybody was going about their businesses.
“So yesterday when some people were returning from the farm two persons were shot and killed by unknown gunmen.
“We don’t know where those people (gunmen) come from. So the two were killed yesterday along the farm road.
“So people are in panic and leaving the community a second time. But now we are seeing security operatives in the community,” Aneke stated.
The former CDC chairman further said the security operatives were searching for the culprits.
The state police acting spokesman, Grace Iringe-Koko, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
