The United States, US, President, Joe Biden has lambasted his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over the latter’s reported genocidal act in Ukraine.
Biden’s latest excoriation of Putin comes amid widespread reports of massacre in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, calling the Russian ruler ‘war criminal’.
Biden seeks additional sanctions against Russia in the light of reports of the massacre.
Recall that images of dead bodies strewn on a deserted and war ravaged streets of Bucha town went viral at the weekend. Bucha had been under the control of Russia.
The development ignited international outrage and condemnation and calls for a credible investigation.
Addressing reporters in Washington on Monday after spending the weekend in Delaware, Biden emphasized the need to collect evidence with which to try Putin as a war criminal.
He said, “You may remember I got criticised for calling Putin a war criminal.
“Well, the truth of the matter, we saw it happen in Bucha … he is a war criminal.”
The war between Russia and Ukraine began in February this year after the latter’s refusal to shelve its planned joining of NATO, escalating tension between the two eastern Europe countries.
Putin subsequently ordered the invasion of Ukraine due to the political differences between both nations.
