John Obong, a 39-year-old Estate Manager from Lagos, was detained by police in the Ikoyi Division of Lagos and arraigned in a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly receiving N1.3 million from a property seeker named Chika Obi under false pretences.
Obong reportedly conspired with an accomplice currently at large to collect N1,300,000 from the complainant with the promise of providing him with a self-contained apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, but he failed to do so and instead allegedly transferred the money to his own use.
Police further alleged that following the incident, the complainant reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ikoyi Division, CSP Tijani Mustapha N’abba who directed his team led by Inspector Tope Ijatuyi to arrest the defendant.
Obong, a resident of 4, Bankole Road, Ikoyi, Lagos from Akwa Ibom State was charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretense.
Police Counsel, Reuben Solomon told the court in the charge marked P/03/2022 that the defendant committed the offence on 26 January, 2022 at 25, Olori Mojisola Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Solomon informed the court that the defendant and his accomplice now at large tricked the complainant and collected the N1,300,000 from the complainant with a promise to provide a self-contain apartment for him in Ikoyi, Lagos but that instead the defendant converted the money to his use and failed to provide the apartment for the complainant.
He said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under sessions 411 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate O.S Abioye granted him N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Abioye adjourned the case till 5 May, 2022 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility till he perfected the bail conditions.
