A Lagos Federal High Court has sentenced one Mariam Saliu to 10 years imprisonment for trafficking 2.5kg cannabis sativa popularly called Indian hemp.
The presiding judge, Justice Daniel Osiagor, delivered the judgement after Salisu pleaded guilty to a count-charge of unlawful export of the prohibited weed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The accused, according to the prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, was arrested on March 5, 2022, during the examination of cargoes going to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the Skyway Handling Company Limited (SAHCO) Export Shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Abu told the court that the accused procured an agent, Audu Muhammed, to commit the act.
Following the convict’s guilty plea, with the exhibits tendered, Justice Osiagor sentenced her to 10 years with an option to pay N200,000 fine.
