Two men, Sule Kurti (49) and Omotunde Ismail (35), who beat and locked up two police inspectors who were in their house to arrest them have been arraigned before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the suspects were accused of assaulting and threatening the lives of the two police officers.
The suspects are standing trial on four counts of assault, threat to life, breach of peace and malicious damage.
The prosecutor, ASP Ikem Uko, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on May 7, at about 5 am in the Morogbo area of Lagos.
He said the defendants threatened the lives of Inspector Izevbekhai Imevbore and Inspector Ariyo Kayode, who were sent from Morogbo Division to arrest them.
ASP Uko further told the court: “The defendants hit one of the officers, Kayode, with an iron rod on his left hand and shoulder and inflicted internal injury on him.
“They also assaulted them by locking the police officers in their house and beating them while performing their constitutional duty.
“The defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by locking the iron gate against them.
“They also damaged one phone valued at N45,000, property of one of the police officers.”
The Magistrate, Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to May 25.
