At least three persons have been burnt to death and three others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident around Opokuma Junction, East-West Road, in the Kololuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The accident, which happened around 5.45pm on Monday, involved a Toyota Camry with number plate LS 529 KY, and a Mazda 323 with number plate GBB 532 XA.
The Toyota car was said to be loaded with petroleum products exploded after a head-on collision with the Mazda.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Bayelsa Command, said the accident was caused by speeding, which resulted in loss of control.
“The two cars were burnt and the victims in the Mazda were burnt beyond recognition, as the Camry was loaded with adulterated Premium Motor Spirit, which sparked the fire.
“The FRSC, with the assistant of other motorists, cleared the obstruction from the road for free flow of traffic,” the command added in a statement.
The spokesman for the state police command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed that a police constable was among the survivors.
He said, “There were three casualties and three others were hospitalised. They were badly burnt.”
