The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji has disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission has received 5,305 Bimodal Voters Accreditation System for the July 16 governorship election in Osun State and its configuration concluded.
The commission also put the number of registration areas in Osun at 332 with 1,955,657 registered voters and 335,298 Permanent Voter Cards collected so far.
These statements were made by the Osun REC in his speech delivered via zoom during a dialogue session organised by a coalition of over 80 human rights organisations under the aegis of Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja on Sunday.
The dialogue session, which was supported by the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, also provided an opportunity to review the recently conducted Ekiti State governorship election.
Raji said, “We received 5,305 BVAS from INEC Headquarters on June 24, 2022. The configuration of the BVAS has been done at Abuja Headquarters. The BVAS have been properly stored in our strong room.
“The charging of the BVAS started on Monday June 26 2022 and is ongoing. Total polling units in Osun is 3,763, total number of RAs is 332, while total registered voters is 1,955,657. The total PVCs delivered in 2022 is 335,298.”
At the event, the Convener of NCSSR, Ene Obi, called on the President Muhammadu Buhari, to appoint non-partisan individuals of impeccable characters to replace many of the RECs whose tenure would elapse soon.
She said, “Finally, Situation Room notes that the tenure of several RECs of INEC will elapse in a matter of days. Therefore, we are calling on President Buhari to urgently nominate individuals of impeccable characters, and that are non-partisan.
“The President should prioritise experience in undertaking this task, in view of the daunting responsibilities awaiting RECs in the 2023 general election.”
