Athletes who have so far represented Nigeria admirably at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham have received $25,000 from the country’s sports ministry.
The donation was made by the ministry at a ceremony held at the Birmingham Hilton Garden under the direction of Abba Yola, Chief of Staff to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development.
Each gold medal winner received $5,000, and each coach received $3,000 in addition.
In the women’s 76kg weightlifting competition, Taiwo Laidi won a silver medal and $3,000 in reward.
For bronze medal winners, Edidiong Joseph Umaofia, Islamiyat Yusuf and Mary Osijo, all got $2,000 each for their effort.
The other athletes, who won medals in their various events on Thursday, are expected to be rewarded soon.
