Kano storey-building collapse leaves two dead – Authorities

At least two persons lost their lives in the collapse of a three-storey building at the GSM Market in the Kano metropolitan area of the State.

One of the deceased was a worker at the Kano Electricity Distribution Company.

Report has it that when the three-storey building collapsed and trapped no fewer than 10 people on Tuesday evening, business activities were ongoing in the market.

Emergency responders among whom were officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Kano State Fire Service, the police, among others, were deployed to the area to rescue the victims.

The emergency responders during the operation, recovered the corpse of a victim and rescued nine persons who were rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for immediate treatment.

Musa Abdullah, the Secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Society in Kano, confirmed that a KEDCO worker lost his life in the disaster and one of the rescued victims died while receiving treatment in the hospital.

The Secretary explained, “A worker of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, who was trying to disconnect the building from the high tension got trapped and died on the spot.”

Manzo Ezekiel, the Head, National Emergency Management Agency, explained in a statement that some of the injured victims had been treated and discharged.

Manzo explained that NEMA immediately mobilised emergency responders to the site for rescue operations when alerted of the incident.

Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer, Kano Fire Service, while also reacting to the development, identified the injured victims as Naziru Abdulkadir, 24; Magaji Abubakar, 27; Abdurauf Muhammad, 38; and Minjibir Ibrahim, 46; Ahmad Buhari Haruna, 16; Sadiq Haruna, 19; Abdurashid Basiru, 36, and Danladi Lawan, 29.
