One Vincent Awonugba has been remamded in a correctional centre by an Akure Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stabbing his grandmother, Florence Olaoye, to death.
Awonugba, 23, allegedly killed his 68-year-old grandmother on August 6, 2022,in her residence in Labata Orimolade, Ondo, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area, in Ondo State.
He was subsequently arrested the same day by the Police.
According to the prosecution, Abdulateef Suliaman, the defendant, stabbed the victim on her neck after a dispute over his odd nighttime movements.
With the defendant arraigned on one count of murder, he was said to have violated Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
Suliaman also requested that the defendant be held in custody pending legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP.
Awonugba, whose plea was not taken, appeared in court without legal representation.
The defendant, during an interrogation, claimed to be innocent of the crime, as he stressed that neighbours intentionally linked him to his grandmother’s death because they knew they were always at loggerheads.
The Magistrate, Tope Aladejana, in his ruling, remanded the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the DPP, with the case adjourned till September 27, 2022, for mention.
