Fabrizio Romano, a football transfer expert, has confirmed that Chelsea and Red Bull Salzburg are close to finalizing a deal for the hiring of Christoph Freund as their new sporting director.
Todd Boehly, a co-owner of Chelsea, is looking for a sporting director to work with Potter, who recently took over as manager from Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea is currently operating without a sporting director, but after Potter emphasized the significance of the position after closely collaborating with Dan Ashworth during his time at Brighton, Chelsea now wants to hire one.
However, according to Romano, Freund will work with Chelsea coach, Graham Potter, at Stamford Bridge.
He disclosed this in a tweet on his Twitter handle on Sunday.
Romano tweeted: “Chelsea are now set to reach agreement on personal terms with Christoph Freund as new director.
“Talks on with Salzburg to get it signed soon. Freund, man behind top deals like (Erling) Haaland, (Sadio) Mane, (Naby) Keita, (Dayot) Upamecano — ideas, data, talents. He’ll work together with Potter.”
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Freund confirmed that he has been in touch with Chelsea.
Freund told Sky Sports Austria (via Daily Mail): “You should never rule anything out in football, and Chelsea are such a huge club. I have had exchanges with them from time to time. We spoke more often a month or two ago because they were interested in (Benjamin) Sesko.”
