Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Makarfi has been appointed as Katsina State’s new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) approved the position months after the previous REC, Jibrin Zarewa, expired.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Thursday by Shehu Sa’idu, the Head of the Department of Voters’ Education and Publicity.
Since Zarewa’s departure in August 2022, the Administrative Secretary has been in charge of the commission’s operations.
Makarfi was the Director of Academic Planning at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria until the most recent development. He also lectured at the Faculty of Environmental Design and the Quantity Survey Department.
WITHIN NIGERIA has learned that Katsina’s new REC made his first appearance in the office on Monday, November 7, 2022.
Administrative Secretary Isah Magaji Gummi and other staff greeted him at the commission’s state headquarters.
Prof. Makarfi was one of the 19 new Resident Electoral Commissioners sworn in by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu on 3 November 2022 after passing the mandatory Senate screening and President Muhammad Buhari’s final approval of the appointments.
