NANS to hold nationwide protest over detention of student who criticised Aisha Buhari

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS says it will embark on nationwide public demonstration to protest the remand of Aminu Adamu Mohammed over a tweet on weight of wife of the president, Aisha Buhari.

Recall that Aminu, a student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, was last week, picked up by security operatives and whisked to Abuja over the tweet.

He was arraigned on Tuesday before the Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court No. 14 and was later remanded in prison.

In light of the development, the leadership of NANS, in a statement issued by its president, Usman Umar Barambu scheduled a nationwide protest for Monday, December 5.

The statement said the demonstration which would be against the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba and wife of the president, Aisha Mohammed Buhari would continue until the student is released unconditionally.

The statement reads, “Sequel to the exhaustion of every option available to us before confrontation in seeking the freedom of one of us, who was arrested in a questionable manner, tortured, molested, harassed and detained by agents of the government, you are hereby notified of the decision of the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students to proceed on a nationwide protest.

“We have consulted and consolidated and neither yielded desirable results in seeking the freedom of Aminu Adamu Mohammed, student of the Federal University of Dutse, hence, the protest will commence as follow:

“Monday 5th, December 2022, nationwide protest. Please note that the demonstration shall continue until he is released unconditionally.

“The protest is against the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba and wife of the president, Aisha Mohammed Buhari”.
