Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has sent a surprising invitation to President Muhammadu Buhari to commission two newly constructed cell blocks at the Makurdi medium correctional centre in the state.
This was disclosed by Governor Ortom at a meeting with the people of Ugondo, the host community for the correctional service.
Ortom and Buhari have not enjoyed the best of relationship in their second term in office. They duo have been estranged.
Recall Governor Ortom had in the past castigated the president Buhari’s APC-led administration over perennial killings in his state.
The criticism reached a dizzying height and somewhat bothered on attack on the president personality in the wake of reoccurring Fulani herdsmen attacks in parts of Benue State, which led to deaths and destruction of properties.
More also, the invitation is coming amidst Ortom’s running battle in alliance with the “the Integrity Group” against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over the retention of Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the Party.
The group wants Ayu to resign as a precondition to supporting Atiku for the forthcoming presidential election in 2023.
The construction of new correctional centers commenced followed reports of jailbreaks across the country, including the one at Kuje Area Council in the FCT, among several others.
The governor warned the community against encroaching on land ceded to the service and any other federal agency contributing to the growth and security of the people of Benue.
