Gunmen kidnap 4 after police deploy tactical team on Calabar highway

Gunmen in the Uyanga axis of the Calabar-Ogoja highway have kidnapped Mrs. Rose Bassey, a former Accountant General of Cross River, and three other people.

Edim-Edim Omin, a well-known evangelist in the state, was shot by the gunmen who blocked the highway and suffered injuries.

The evangelist, who was shot but managed to flee, is now being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

The incident happened just 24 hours after the state’s police command announced it had sent out tactical teams to protect drivers using the highway.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident and stated that the four victims were kidnapped on Tuesday, promising that the command would find the shooters and free the hostages.

“It is a sad reality for us and as I speak with you, the Commissioner of Police is heading to that axis to assess the situation of things himself,” she added.

Ugbo assured that the command would restore normalcy to the highway.

No fewer than 20 persons were kidnapped along the Uyanga-Ikomita axis of the Calabar-Ogoja highway in the last two months.

Among those abducted were two medical doctors who were later released after industrial action by the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association.
