Nigeria elections: US opens up on preferred candidate, political party

The government of the United States, US, has stated that it has no preferred candidate for the 2023 election.

Additionally, the US government declared that it would not be supporting any political party in the Nigerian elections of 2023.

According to Will Stevens, the US Consul General in Lagos, the US Mission is only concerned with ensuring that Nigerians get their wish for peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.

Stevens disclosed this at the International Anti-Corruption Day event organized by the Consulate in partnership with BudgIT over the weekend.

According to Stevens: “Focusing on the upcoming elections in Nigeria, let me be very clear, the United States does not have a preferred candidate or party in the upcoming election.

“Our interest is in supporting credible, transparent, and peaceful elections that represent the will of Nigerians.

“We urged all Nigerians to reject the use of violence and inflammatory rhetoric during and after election day.”
