The meeting between Jorge Mendes and the Portuguese Federation was not fruitful.
According to reports, any suggestion of a job-sharing agreement between Roma and Portugal has been rejected.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Mendes met with federation president Fernando Soares Gomes da Silva on Thursday to discuss Jose Mourinho’s current plans.
For the time being, Roma has his attention, but he hopes the club will not get in the way of his desire to manage the national team by June 2023.
Mourinho will meet with Roma’s owners to discuss a solution, with the Portuguese expected to request a one-year extension on his contract with the club to take charge of Portugal.
When asked about the Portugal national team job on Thursday, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager refused to comment.
Portugal, who were knocked out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals by Morocco, are looking for a new coach after parting ways with Fernando Santos, who had been in charge for eight years.
Several players failed to thank Santos for his service, sparking rumors of deep schisms in the squad following a disappointing World Cup campaign marred by Cristiano Ronaldo’s histrionics after being dropped to the bench for their two knockout games.
According to the Italian press, Mourinho believes strongly in the Portugal project and has requested the ability to devote himself entirely to the Portuguese national team.
