Former France international Patrice Evra thinks Cristiano Ronaldo, who is Portugal’s captain, might hang up his football boots after his nation was eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup a few days ago.
Evra claimed that Ronaldo is currently a “bad player” in everything he does after he failed to realise his “dream” of winning the World Cup in Qatar.
Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was terminated prior to the start of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, making him a free agent at the moment.
And Evra, who played alongside Ronaldo during his first stint at Manchester United, insisted he would not be surprised if the former Juventus and Real Madrid star ended his hugely successful career.
“I don’t know [what he will do next]. [Lionel] Messi is saying he will retire [from the World Cup], but I don’t know if Ronaldo will retire,” Evra told Sky Sports.
“Sometimes, when you are getting so much criticism, especially at the end of your career, you are like, OK, I think it is time to stop’.
“That must be a feeling, especially when you are not in the starting XI of your national team, because that is what Cristiano wanted; to play, be fit and win the World Cup with his country.
“This was his dream; now he doesn’t have that dream. Although I won’t talk for Cristiano, I wouldn’t be surprised if he says he is retiring. Now everything Cristiano does, he is a ‘bad person’, a ‘bad player’ or whatever. I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to retire.”
