Brazilian football legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, said Lionel Messi “deserved” to be a World Cup winner after Argentina defeated France in a penalty shootout in Sunday’s final in Qatar.
WITHIN NIGERIA reports that Kylian Mbappé scored an hat-trick and Lionel Messi scored twice as the game ended 3-3 after 120 minutes. However, Emiliano Martinez saved twice during the penalty shoot-out from Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni, to hand Argentina the title for the third time in their history.
Reacting to Argentina’s victory, Pele, a three-time World Cup champion, wrote on Instagram, “Today, football continues to tell its story, as always, in an enthralling way. Messi winning his first World Cup, as his trajectory deserved.”
Pele also hailed French striker, Mbappe who scored a hat-trick before coolly slotting in a penalty in the shootout.
“My dear friend, Mbappe, scoring four goals in a final. What a gift it was to watch this spectacle to the future of our sport.”
