Wayne Rooney has explained why he prefers Lionel Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, a former teammate of his at Manchester United.
Rooney praised Messi on Twitter while the 2022 World Cup was going on.
The manager of DC United cited his own tweet from 2012 in which he declared Messi to be the greatest player ever and stated, “Nothing has changed.”
And writing in his Times column, Rooney went into further details as to why he picked the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.
He said: “I played against him several times and it’s his ability to take and hold the ball, to control games, run at players, pass and score and be the difference. Close up, you just can’t get near him.
“He is always in control. If he has the ball at his feet, he determines everything, your decision-making included. Being his opponent is a difficult place to be.”
