Doyin Okupe

Former media aide to erstwhile president, Goodluck Jonathan, has resigned as director general of Peter Obi, presidential campaign council.

Okupe announced his resignation in a terse statement on Tuesday.

His resignation is coming barely 24 hours after he was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment by an high court in Abuja for money laundering.

He had since paid the ₦13 million.

Since the news of Okupe’s conviction broke on Tuesday, Peter Obi’s supporters and opposition alike have waited with bated breath on the next line of action as Obi’s campaign has been heavy on fight against corruption and intolerance toward malfeasance.

Obi’s touted aversion for corruption is his selling point during this electioneering season and has endeared many to him.

Consequently, Okupe announced his resignation from the campaign team on Tuesday. He however said he’s still a staunch Obidient, a sobriquet for Obi’s supporters, and he will continue to contribute to the cause and do what he can in private capacity to ensure Obi’s presidential ambition materialises.

His resignation has been applauded by many, with Obi’s teeming supporters saying that’s a glimpse of what Nigerians will see if he is elected president in February next year.
