Leeds United had a night to forget on Wednesday when they welcomed Manchester City to Elland Road only to lose 3-1.
From start to finish, Manchester City demonstrated a greater desire to win than Leeds United, with the visitors controlling 69% of the ball while Leeds controlled 31%.
City had the chance to humiliate Leeds, but they failed to make the most of their 26 shots, 9 of which were on target. Leeds had only 9 shots, one of which was on target.
Rodri opened the scoring for Manchester City after 45 minutes of play. De Bruyne found Rodri, who laid it off to Mahez in the build-up to the goal. Meslier saved his attempt, but the rebound fell at the feet of Rodri, who finished easily.
Erling Haaland scored his first goal of the game in the 51st minute, making the game more difficult for the hosts.
Cooper played the ball across to Koch in the build-up to the goal, but the defender was unaware of Grealish, who took possession. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, he slid it across to Haaland, who finished easily.
Haaland demonstrated his seriousness by scoring his second goal of the game and City’s third. For the second time, the Norwegian striker and Jack Grealish combined. De Bruyne cut inside from the right and played the ball to Haaland, who passed it to Grealish. Meslier saved Haaland’s powerful effort in the corner of the net after the winger completed a one-two with the striker.
Leeds United’s consolation goal came in the 73rd minute, thanks to a strike from Pascal Struijk, who got onto the end of a corner from Sam Greenwood and headed it toward the bottom corner. Ederson got a touch on it, but he couldn’t keep the ball out of the net.
Following that, neither team scored again, as Manchester City cruised to a 3-1 victory. With the victory, City is now five points behind first-placed Arsenal.
