Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has stated that he has not ruled out his team challenging for the Premier League title this season.
Eddie Howe and his team defeated Leicester 3-0 on December 26 to win their sixth consecutive league game.
Newcastle is now third in the Premier League table, seven points behind league leaders Arsenal and two points behind Manchester City, who both have a game in hand.
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers previously stated that Newcastle are “definitely” in the title race and could emulate the Foxes’ 2015-16 Premier League-winning run.
Having watched them through the season and seeing them today, they’ve got that hunger there with a point to prove,” Rodgers said after his team lost 3-0 to Newcastle on Monday.
You make a great start and that gives you the freedom that you can stay there.
In his reaction to Brendan Rodgers’ comment, coach Eddie Howe said: “I won’t say we can’t [win title].”
“I have no issue with the fans dreaming of what we may accomplish”, Howe added following the victory that momentarily moved his team up to second in the Premier League.
On the other hand, Howe attempted to downplay any January transfer window spending despite the fact that Newcastle’s Saudi-backed ownership group had invested nearly £210 million in the team since completing their takeover in October 2021.
If you’re looking to improve the team, the starting XI as it is if we have no injuries, then that is a challenge in the market currently,” he said.
With an unlimited budget, that might be possible – not that we necessarily have a budget at the moment – but with Financial Fair Play looming and with those restrictions, it’s almost impossible.
Newcastle United’s next Premier League game is against Leeds United. The game is scheduled to kick off at 16:00 on Saturday, December 31.
