The G-5 governors of the People Democratic Party (PDP) arrived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State’s capital, on Friday after a trip to London, United Kingdom (UK).
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike is part of the G-5, as are Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Enugu) (Abia).
NIGERIA REPORTS that the PDP’s disgruntled leaders have flown to the United Kingdom.
The G-5 may have traveled abroad for a strategic meeting ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Wike and his team have repeatedly demanded the resignation of PDP National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
The party chieftains who have found flaws in the PDP leadership since the party’s convention in May 2022 are making the demand as a condition for supporting Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambitions in the 2023 elections.
They have insisted that the PDP national chairmanship be given to a Southerner.
As things stand, the G-5’s choice of presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections is uncertain. Although the PDP governors have publicly rejected Atiku’s candidacy, it is unclear who they will support in the election.
However, while they were in London, speculations circulated that the G5 were negotiating a deal with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
