Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion and former world number one, announced her pregnancy and announced she would miss the 2023 tennis season.
Osaka recently announced her withdrawal from the upcoming Australian Open, a competition she has twice won.
Osaka has only competed in 11 tournaments in 2022 and hasn’t played a full match since losing in the first round of the US Open.
After losing in the third round of the 2021 US Open, she also told reporters that she was no longer enjoying the sport.
Osaka tweeted on Wednesday announcing her pregnancy, including a picture of an ultrasound.
“I realize that life is so short, and I don’t take any moments for granted; every day is a new blessing and adventure.
“I know that I have much to look forward to in the future. One thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,” she wrote.
