Cameroon’s government, led by President Paul Biya, has repatriated eight hundred and fifty-five (855) Nigerians.
The citizens were welcomed into the country on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
The refugees were the second group of Nigerians who returned from the neighboring African country.
Cameroonian officials, led by the Governor of Cameroon’s Far North Region, Minjinyawa Bakari, announced the latest development during a brief farewell ceremony in Maroua on Tuesday, bringing the total number of refugees returned to Nigeria to 1,300.
During the transfer of Nigerian citizens, officials gave them farewell packages containing food and non-food items.
Governor Zulum, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian government, thanked the Cameroonian president, other officials, and host communities for their care of Nigerian refugees over the last nearly nine years. President Biya’s donation was appreciated by the governor.
WITHIN NIGERIA, it was learned that the 855 Nigerian refugees living in Minawao Camp had been welcomed by a border community between Nigeria and Cameroon, close to Banki in Bama Local Government Area, by Chairman Transitional Committee, Hon Grema Terab.
The Federal Government provided N40,000 to each refugee, as well as a 50kg bag of rice, a 10kg bag of beans, 5 litres of cooking oil, a carton of seasoning, a wrapper, and N60,000 per household from the state government.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Cameroon Office, led by Madam Kimberly, visited Banki camp and praised the Zulum administration’s resettlement efforts.
It was quite impressive adding that this the vision required to end the plight of refugees, she said.
