The Nigerian Air Force is accused of killing scores of innocent civilians during an erroneous air bombardment.
According to Peoples Gazette, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night near the Nasarawa-Benue border.
According to eyewitnesses, the airstrike occurred in Rukubi, near the southern border with Benue in Doma Local Government Area.
At least 47 people, mostly Fulani herdsmen, were confirmed dead, with scores more being evacuated to hospitals in Nasarawa and Benue.
The incident was reportedly confirmed by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, who stated that efforts to resolve the crisis with the military are already underway.
According to a spokesman for the Nigerian military, the air strike in the area was directed at bandits and terrorists.
He did not say how many bandits were killed during the attack or if there were any other casualties besides civilians.
Confrontations between Benue authorities and the Fulani community between the two states are said to have erupted as a result of the erroneous airstrike.
According to witnesses, the bombardments occurred shortly after a group of Fulani herdsmen traveled to Benue to retrieve their seized livestock.
They began their journey back to their base in Nasarawa after paying about N27 million in fines to recover their cattle before the bombs were dropped on them.
