Chelsea has made a bid of 120 million euros for Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who is currently on loan at Benfica.
If Benfica accepts this offer and Enzo Fernandez joins Chelsea, it will be a British transfer record.
It is unclear whether the Blues’ rumored installment-based offer will be accepted in light of this new bid.
If the deal is approved, the cost will exceed the £100 million Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.
Fernandez was named the tournament’s youngest player when Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar.
Benfica manager Roger Schmidt claimed that Chelsea’s pursuit of Fernandez was “closed,” and that Benfica had previously accused Chelsea of attempting to cause trouble.
However, if there was no indication that an offer might be accepted, it’s unlikely that the Premier League team would have made a new one.
Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Wolves after leaving Flamengo.
Wolves signed the 21-year-old, who is now Julen Lopetegui’s sixth signing, for a reported £15 million.
Wolves have the option to extend Gomes’ contract by one year after outbidding French club Lyon.
He has scored once in 86 league games for his hometown team, and he won the Copa Libertadores in 2022.
Gomes, who made his professional debut in November 2020, also helped Flamengo win the Brazilian Serie A league championship and the domestic cup.
Wolves have moved up to 17th in the Premier League, just outside the relegation zone on goal differential, with seven points from a possible 15.
