Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian international, was unable to help Atalanta defeat Inter Milan on Tuesday night.
Inter Milan and Atalanta met at the San Siro in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. Ademola Lookman, the club’s top goalscorer this season, was expected to help Atalanta overcome the in-form Inter ahead of the game, according to Naija News.
Interestingly, Lookman’s club coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, chose to start him from the bench and bring him into the game in the 54th minute.
Previously, Inter dominated the first half but fell short of their goal despite total dominance. Just before halftime, Calhanoglu’s powerful strike from outside the box hit the post.
Atalanta was abysmal, having not even attempted a shot on goal in the first half. The visitors struggled to get into a rhythm in both the first and second halves.
Even the introduction of Lookman into the game had little effect as Inter continued to press for a goal. Unfortunately, Inter scored three minutes after Lookman entered the game.
In the 57th minute, Matteo Darmian finished beautifully with his left foot from the edge of the box to give the home team their first goal. Inter’s lone goal was enough to keep them alive and advance to the semi-finals.
As things currently stand, Inter will face either Juventus or Lazio in the two-leg semi-finals in April.
On Wednesday, Fiorentina will host Torino, and Roma will host Cremonese.
