Suspected cultists have killed a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Service attached to the Central Security, Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday opposite the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Obosi, along Nkpor/Obosi highway.
It was gathered that men of the vigilante service were on a routine patrol when they ran into the hoodlums, who engaged them in a gun duel for several minutes.
According to PUNCH, a source said during the gun battle, the gang shot dead a vigilante.
The source noted that the incident disrupted commercial activities in the community, including a planned protest against land-grabbing activities proposed by landlords in the area.
Both the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, and the Palace Secretary, Chief Shedrack Okenwa, confirmed the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police had commenced a manhunt for the suspects.
“It was an unfortunate incident; no arrest has been made yet, but investigation is ongoing please,” Ikenga added.
