Nigeria and the US on Thursday signed a deal to return $954,000 that was part of the looted property that had been found on Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the late former governor of Bayelsa State.
Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, the nation’s solicitor general and permanent secretary of the federal ministry of justice, and Mary Beth Leonard, the US ambassador to Nigeria, both signed on behalf of their respective nations.
Mrs. Jedy-Agba said that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that the repatriated funds be used to upgrade the healthcare facilities in Bayelsa State while speaking at the event held at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja.
She claimed the $954000 came from property and investment funds in Maryland and Massachusetts, where Alamieyeseigha invested some of the funds he stole while in office.
