Usman Alkali, the Inspector-General of Police, insisted on Wednesday that the police are looking into certain governors and people whose statements are thought to have sparked riots in response to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) naira redesign policy.
While responding to inquiries from State House correspondents in Abuja, Alkali said this.
Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the IGP were both present at the news conference that followed the National Security Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, which was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Alkali stated that those found guilty would unquestionably face charges.
He claimed that because the guilty governors were immune from prosecution, the Police were unable to do so.
Governors Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, and Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State had publicly criticized the CBN’s naira swap policy.
They asked citizens of their states to continue to spend the old N500 and N1000 as legal tenders.
“We all know why the governors haven’t been cautioned. We are investigating. Whoever does anything can be investigated,” Akali said.
“However, there are some people who have immunity. I think that’s one of the reasons why they haven’t been cautioned.
“The immunity will not stop us from cautioning them; from warning them; from advising them; and we’re doing so.”
