Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has provided justifications for why he won’t oppose Governor of Benue State Samuel Ortom’s bid for the Senate.
According to information obtained, Ortom will represent the PDP in the 2023 elections for the Benue North-West senatorial district.
Recall that Ortom, one of the five PDP governors who are disgruntled and are known as the “G5 governors,” has refused to support Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.
Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, and his supporters have insisted that Ayu step down in favor of a candidate of southern ancestry.
The G5 governors maintained that Atiku and Ayu, as the party’s presidential candidate and national chairman, cannot both be from the same region, which led to an unresolved crisis in the party’s leadership as a result of Ayu’s refusal to resign from his position.
Ayu nevertheless stated to pressmen on Thursday at his Makurdi residence that he would not oppose Ortom “because he is a candidate of the party” despite the fact that he was in the middle of the crisis.
He asserts that he can never work against his desire to become a senator because of this.
But despite the fact that Atiku has received the support of the three senators from Benue who sit in the National Assembly—Gabriel Suswam, Emmanuel Oker-Jev, and Abba Moro—Ortom opted to support Peter Obi, the nominee of the Labour Party.
The PDP national chairman claimed that Atiku’s emergence could drastically alter the course of the nation while campaigning for support for his principal.
He advised Nigerians to think back on the difficulties they had to endure over the previous eight years and choose Atiku wisely.
Because only the PDP can save Nigeria, Ayu advised voters to select the option that will ensure the country’s survival.
