The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has stated that it will provide adequate security for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who plan to lead a protest march in Abuja today.
WITHIN NIGERIA reports that the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, is set to lead a protest march to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, over the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.
According to a notice issued by the party on Sunday, the planned protest will begin at 10 a.m. from the PDP headquarters at Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja.
The opposition party also instructed members planning to attend the protest march to dress in black to reflect the party’s solemn mood.
Sadiq Abubakar, the FCT Commissioner of Police, told The Punch on Sunday that the command will ensure the safety of people and property during the protest march.
Abubakar went on to say that the command will make sure the protest is peaceful, democratic, and free of violence.
He said;
Protests have so many categories. Ours is to ensure that a protest is peaceful. However, it is not in my capacity to determine whether it is right or wrong for them to protest.
Ours is to ensure peace and tranquillity in the FCT. Our duty is to ensure that there’s the security of lives and properties of everyone, and we’ll protect everybody.
