On Thursday, 17 people were killed and three others were injured in an auto accident at Yaura village on the Wudil-Bauchi Road in Kano State’s Albasu local government area.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Kano Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident to Kano newsmen.
According to him, the accident involved a Honda Accord car with the licence plate NSR 81 VW and a Volkswagen Sharon (bus) with the licence plate NNG 275 XA.
He stated that a motorist passing by notified FRSC patrol officials at around 14:20 pm, and that a rescue team was immediately mobilised to the scene of the incident at 14:25 pm.
According to Abdullahi, the crash occurred as a result of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, which resulted in a loss of control and a head-on collision, with one of the vehicles immediately bursting into flames.
“The crash involved a total of 21 passengers in the two vehicles out of which 11 adult males, five adult females and one male child lost their lives, while three others that sustained serious injuries involved one adult male, one adult female and one male child,” he said.
The sector commander noted that the injured were taken to the Wudil General Hospital for treatment, while the corpses of the deceased were handed over to their relatives.
While commiserating with families of the victims, he prayed for the repose of their souls, and advised motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulation to maintain an accident-free society.
