Senator Shehu Sani, a former member of the 8th National Assembly, has claimed that politicians paid electorates to buy votes today during the governorship and house of assembly elections.
It is understood that there were a number of irregularities today during the governorship and house of assembly elections in the 28 states where elections were held. These include vote buying, ballot box snatching, and voter intimidation at polling places.
Senator Sani claimed on Twitter in the evening hours of Saturday that the old Naira notes recently made legal tender by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in response to a Supreme Court order were used to buy people’s conscience at the polls today.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain also claimed that Kaduna residents, primarily poor women, were offered N1,000 to N2,000 naira in exchange for their votes today.
The Old Naira notes that was made a legal tender by the Supreme Court became the tool for vote buying in Kaduna State. People, mostly poor women within the metropolis and beyond, were paid from 1k to 2k for their votes, Sani wrote on his Twitter page.
