The visit by the vice president-elect Kashim Shettima to former heads of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar and General Ibrahim Babangida was for a specific purpose, it has been disclosed.

Recall that WITHIN NIGERIA reported that Shettima visited the leaders on Thursday at their Uphill houses in Minna, the Niger state capital, with the help of the governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, and Senator Sani Musa.

Shettima, who arrived in Minna at around 3 p.m., went to the elder statesmen’s homes for a meeting that was held in private for around 30 minutes at each.

However, sources close to the two leaders told Channels Television that the visits by Shettima were not unconnected with the incoming government to be led by the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu.

The sources said the former Borno state governor came to seek the support of the two elder statesmen for the Tinubu government.

It was further gathered that the move by the Vice President-Elect was to consult with the two former military leaders over a plot by some politicians to install an interim government as confirmed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday.

Shettima had earlier told newsmen that he was in the State to meet the two leaders and get advice, input, and sort their perspectives on the issues confronting the nation.

The vice president-elect said that the challenges bedeviling Niger state and other states would be adequately addressed.

He said: “Our elders are the beacon of hope and we will continue to tap from their wealth of experience. They have a lot to offer the nation and humanity. We will continue to reach out to them for their advice, inputs, and perspectives on issues confronting us as a nation.”
