A 47-year-old panel beater, Segun Adegboyega, has committed suicide by drowning himself in a well at their residence on Elegbede Street, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that Adegboyega woke up on Wednesday morning, left his flat and walked towards the well situated at the back of his residence, and jumped into it.
According to PUNCH, during a visit to the scene, Adegboyega’s neighbour, who identified himself simply as Korede, expressed shock over the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
He said as of the time the father of two jumped into the well, some residents would either be washing or cooking close to the well, adding that on the day he jumped into the well, it took a while before people noticed he had drowned.
Korede said, “I cannot explain why such a friendly and happy man would do something so mysterious. Adegboyega was not a person of anger or trouble, however, I cannot tell if he had any issues but I don’t think he should have pushed himself this far. It is very sad and unexplainable, only God knows what could have caused him to do this.”
PUNCH reported that an attempt to speak with his grieving family members wasn’t successful as a yet-to-be-identified relative said they were not interested in speaking to the press.
She said, “Please leave, we don’t want to talk to any press, we have told the police everything. We are mourning; the wife is not around, her people have come to carry her away to comfort her.”
Asked about the children, the relative said, “They are still little and cannot even defend themselves.”
It was observed that a piece of wood, a net and iron had been used to seal the well.
The state Police Public Rations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident said Adegboyega’s wife reported that her husband committed suicide.
Hundeyin said, “Around 9.50am, a woman suspected to be the wife of one Segun Adegboyega reported to the station that her husband jumped into the well at their residence on Elegbede Street, Oguntade Bus Stop, Shasha, Lagos State, and drowned.
“She stated that she woke up around 5.30am that Wednesday morning to prepare their children for school but when she returned to the room, she didn’t find her husband. She started looking for him and when she saw that the well was open, she looked inside it and found out that her husband had drowned.”
The PPRO said the woman raised the alarm and neighbours tried to rescue him but he had died already.
He said detectives were sent to the scene and they brought out the deceased’s corpse from the well and deposited it at the Mainland mortuary, Yaba.
